Ictis

Ictis

Ictis’ is a scale model of St Nicholas (Drakes) Island in Plymouth Sound, with integrated re-imaginged underground/underwater tunnels. The work depicts narratives surrounding the island based on unreliable evidence from various time periods referencing tin trading, rabbit warrens and the remains of defences and tunnel networks on the island.

‘Ictis’ was commissioned for the exhibition ‘Ocean’,  at the Arts Institute University of Plymouth, curated by Mary Costello & Simon Poulter. Shown in dialogue with the sculpture were specimens of cassiterite from The Box Plymouth & historical texts by John Leland,  Richard Polwhele and Diodorus Siculus.
